Victorian Ebonised and Gilt Slipper Chair

A striking Victorian ebonised slipper chair, dating to the late 19th century and displaying an exceptionally elegant, sculptural profile.

The low serpentine seat rises into a dramatically curved and deeply scrolled back, supported by an ebonised frame decorated with delicate gilt floral motifs, fine linework and circular rosettes. Turned front legs and swept rear supports retain their castors.

The chair is upholstered in richly textured black fabric, centred by a contrasting gold damask panel and finished with coordinating twisted braid. The bold upholstery complements the black and gold decoration beautifully, giving the chair considerable decorative presence.

An unusual and highly characterful piece of Victorian seating that would make a superb bedroom, dressing-room or occasional chair, as well as a striking statement piece within a more contemporary interior.

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The ebonised frame displays surface marks, rubbing, small chips and areas of loss to the gilt decoration.

The later upholstery remains usable but shows noticeable wear, particularly to the black corded fabric on either side of the seat, where there is flattening and loss of pile. There are also minor marks, pulled threads and some uneven or loose trimming. The upholstery may eventually benefit from restoration or replacement and the chair is offered in its present condition. Castors are present, and the frame appears sturdy.
