Small Queen Anne Walnut Cabinet on Later Stand

A characterful small Queen Anne-period walnut cabinet, dating from the early 18th century and now raised upon a sympathetic later stand.

The cabinet has a moulded rectangular top above an appealing arrangement of small drawers surrounding a central lockable cupboard. Opening the cupboard reveals a fitted interior with further concealed drawers, giving the piece the intriguing, almost secretive character associated with early cabinets of this type.

The walnut has developed a wonderfully warm colour, complemented by decorative brass drop handles, shaped backplates and an attractive central escutcheon. The later stand is well matched and constructed with a shaped apron, cabriole legs and pad feet, presenting the cabinet at a practical and visually balanced height.

Compact in scale but full of presence, this is a particularly engaging piece of early furniture. Its numerous drawers and concealed storage would make it ideal as a collector’s cabinet, jewellery cabinet or distinctive statement piece.

The cabinet displays honest wear, surface variation and evidence of a long working life, all adding to its considerable character and appeal.

Condition

Presented in good, characterful antique condition with historic marks, wear, shrinkage, minor losses and old repairs consistent with its age. Some variation and wear are visible to the drawer fronts, mouldings, sides and top. The stand is a later addition, and the brass furniture may include period replacements.
