Pair of Chinese Archaistic Bronze Vase Table Lamps

A striking pair of Chinese archaistic bronze vase table lamps, the vase bodies dating to the late Qing or early Republic period, circa 1900–1920, and subsequently converted for use as lighting.

Each substantial bronze vase is of baluster form, with a flared neck flanked by stylised mythical-beast handles. The bodies are decorated with incised Chinese characters above broad relief-cast bands of archaistic dragons and geometric motifs.

The bronzes display a wonderfully aged dark patination, with subtle variations and warmer highlights to the raised decoration.

Each vase is mounted upon a carved hardwood lotus-form base and fitted with an adjustable brass column supporting two downward-facing lamp holders. Their generous proportions and sculptural character give the pair tremendous decorative presence.

A highly individual pair of statement lamps, ideal for a console table, sideboard or large country-house interior.

Presented in good decorative antique condition, with surface wear, marks, oxidation and natural variation to the bronze patination consistent with age. The carved wooden bases and lamp fittings are later additions. The lamps should be professionally inspected or tested by a qualified electrician before use. Shades are not included.
