Product Details

A wonderfully characterful English oak coffer, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, circa 1680–1720.

Constructed from thick, hand-worked oak, the coffer has a broad hinged lid divided into two recessed panels and retains its early iron loop hinges. The generously proportioned interior incorporates a traditional candle box, while the plank base, old peg and nail construction and numerous hand-tool marks reveal its considerable age.

Of particular interest are the old “FH” ownership initials set into the lid, adding an appealing sense of history and individuality.

The oak has developed a rich, warm colour and wonderfully timeworn surface, displaying the knocks, marks and variations accumulated through more than three centuries of use. It has been sympathetically cleaned and waxed, preserving the honest patina rather than disguising its age.

Originally intended for the storage of linen, blankets and household possessions, it remains practical today as a blanket chest, occasional table or atmospheric storage piece.

A genuine piece of early English country furniture with tremendous character, texture and presence.

Condition: Good, sound antique condition considering its considerable age. There are extensive historic marks, scratches, shrinkage, old fixing points, minor losses and evidence of previous repairs, all forming part of its character. The surface has been sympathetically waxed and has not been aggressively restored. Please study the photographs for further detail.
