Italian Baroque Revival Carved Walnut Cassone

A striking Italian Baroque Revival carved walnut cassone or coffer, dating to circa 1900 and of particularly useful proportions.

The substantial hinged top is framed by a deeply carved foliate border and opens to reveal a generous storage interior. Below, the boldly architectural façade is arranged with geometric fielded panels divided by projecting pilasters.

The central panel features a large scrolling foliate motif, flanked by boldly carved flowerheads. This decoration continues around the sides, each fitted with a decorative metal carrying handle.

Raised upon a series of compressed bun feet, the cassone has a wonderfully solid stance and retains a rich, dark finish with warmer tones showing through areas of honest wear.

A characterful and practical statement piece, ideal for use as a blanket chest, hall chest, occasional table or distinctive storage piece.

Presented in good decorative antique condition, with expected surface wear, marks, small losses and variation to the dark finish consistent with age and use.
