Georgian Oak Panelled Settle, Circa 1800

Product Details

A wonderfully characterful English oak settle, dating broadly to the late 18th or early 19th century.

The tall back is arranged with five geometric fielded panels beneath a plain moulded top rail, while the shaped open arms are supported on turned uprights. The generously proportioned seat stands above a shaped apron and cabriole-style front legs, giving the settle a lighter and more elegant profile than many traditional country examples.

The oak has developed a rich, almost black colour with extensive honest wear, knocks, marks and surface variation acquired through generations of use. These imperfections give the piece its appealing, uncontrived country-house character and have deliberately not been over-restored.

Supplied with a later fitted cushion in a warm rust-coloured herringbone fabric, which complements the deep tone of the oak while providing practical comfort. The settle also displays beautifully without the cushion for a more traditional appearance.

A substantial and atmospheric piece of English country furniture with excellent proportions, rich colour and unmistakable presence.

Condition: Good usable antique condition, displaying extensive age-related wear, historic repairs, old surface losses, knocks, scratches and tonal variation. There are likely later elements and alterations consistent with a working piece of country furniture of this age. Its honest, timeworn appearance forms an important part of its character. Please study the photographs carefully.
