Antique Brass Helmet Coal Scuttle with Shovel

A substantial late-Victorian or Edwardian brass helmet coal scuttle, dating to around 1890–1910 and retaining its accompanying brass shovel.

The generously proportioned body stands upon a broad circular pedestal base and features an attractive hinged lid decorated with a bold radiating fan motif. Ornately cast supports hold the turned darkwood carrying handle, while a separate opening provides convenient storage for the shovel.

Beautifully decorative as well as practical, the brass has developed a wonderfully warm, mellow appearance with honest surface wear from generations of fireside use. Its generous scale, sculptural form and richly coloured finish give it considerable presence.

An impressive piece of antique fireside furniture, equally appealing beside a traditional fireplace or repurposed as a decorative log holder.

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The brass displays tarnishing, spotting, surface marks, small dents and variations in colour throughout. The interior has darkening, residue and wear from its original use.

The hinged lid operates correctly, and the scuttle is accompanied by a matching-style brass shovel with turned darkwood handle. Please refer to the photographs, which form part of the condition report.
